Methanesulfonic acid is a colorless to slightly yellow liquid with a strong pungent odor. It is a strong acid, slightly weaker than sulfuric acid but stronger than hydrochloric acid and phosphoric acid. Methanesulfonic acid is an important catalyst and solvent in organic synthesis, commonly used to promote various organic reactions such as esterification, hydrolysis, and condensation.
