Trifluoroethanol, a colorless liquid with a similar odor to ethanol, is soluble in water. Due to the strong electron withdrawing effect of trifluoromethyl, the acidity of trifluoroethanol is much stronger than that of ethanol, and it can form stable hydrogen bond complexes with heterocyclic compounds. Trifluoroethanol can be oxidized to trifluoroacetaldehyde or trifluoroacetic acid, and can also be used as a donor for trifluoromethyl to participate in the Horner Wadsworth Emmons reaction in the Still Gennari modification. It has a wide range of applications in the fields of medicine, pesticides, dyes, energy, and organic synthesis. Especially in the field of medicine, trifluoroethanol can be introduced as a functional group into drug structures, increasing the lipid solubility of molecules, improving drug efficacy or reducing toxic side effects.
